Schmidt Hammer

Non-destructive physical testing for strength.
Able to measure PSI on most masonry targets and quantify overall structural rigidity, this is an inexpensive way to rapidly assess large masonry targets such as retaining walls, foundations, and bridge supports for poorly supported areas.

How a Schmidt Hammer Works

The Schmidt Hammer drives an impactor with a known weight and consistent speed into a hardened steel plunger in contact with the target. The bounce or rebound height of the impactor off the plunger directly correlates with the target structure's hardness. Poorly supported, soft structures (e.g. aged, thin brickwork) will yield short rebounds while rigid, hard structures (e.g. thick, hardened steel) will yield long rebounds. Key Features

Automatic Calculation

Instant computation of rebound values based on international standards.

Motorized Hammer Sampling

Ensures consistent measurement forces during sampling.

Impact Angle Independence

Measures without bias from the angle of impact.

Mapping

Co-locate readings with GPS or high-resolution 3D mapping sensors to enhance inspection accuracy.

Remote Operation

Can be operated from a distance using hardline communication to reach difficult spaces.

Modular Design

Easily swapped with other aRC tools such as radar, ultrasound, gas testing, and infrared imaging.

Technical Specifications

Impact Energy

2.207 Nm (N), 0.735 Nm (L).

Strength Range

10 to >100 N/mm2 (1,450 to >10,152 PSI).

Applications

Inspection

Assess the integrity of steel and masonry elements on most structures and assets.

Infrastructure Examination

Evaluate the strength and integrity of roads, bridges, and tunnels.

Reconstruction Analysis

Ensure the quality of restored or repaired structures after remediation work.

Safety Audits

Use as a part of routine checks to ensure the structural integrity of valuable assets.

Rapid Damage Assessment

Post-disaster sampling to quickly gauge the integrity of steel and masonry structures, detecting potential compromise from earthquakes, floods, impact, and other external sources.

Leaves and Dams

Monitor the strength and erosion potential of semiaquatic assets, ensuring they provide the necessary protection with safety margins.
